on the West coast of Ireland. The setting is spectacular and Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holy mountain, seems to follow you everywhere on the course. The 18-hole championship course was designed by Fred Hawtree, designer of the new course at St. Andrews. It was built on part of the Westport House Estate. On first viewing of the site, Hawtree commented, 'the nature of the terrain, part inland and part seaside, the panorama which it commands and its considerable golfing virtues make it uniquely attractive and memorable.' Lush, rolling hills vary from gentle inclines to mini mountains to provide an outstanding championship test. There is a range of long and short par 3s and 4s, and the 12th and 15th in particular call for exceptional skills. Full bar and restaurant facilities are available and overlook the golf course.

forming a delightful archipelago and a topic for continued discussion as to the exact number of islands, it is 365 one for each day of the year Shore fishing is particularly good all round the area, on the Atlantic coast and inner coastline of Clew Bay. There are some recognized spots from which large catches have been taken, while there are many more inviting and interesting places which have not yet been fished. This is a real paradise for the family fisherman, with miles of accessible coastline from which to cast his lure. To add to this, the beaches are almost deserted, and the fisherman can fish in perfect peace while his family can be near to hand enjoying the freedom which the vastness of the area thus affords. Cheltenham winner, who won his first race here in 1993 or Traverse, the unwitting star of the series ‘Only Fools Buy Horses’ who won his first Irish race at Ballinrobe in 2003. The perfect base for a summer break, the West of Ireland has so much to offer its visitors and with seven to eight meetings throughout May to August every year, Ballinrobe Race Meetings are an absolute delight. Recognized as one of the premier racing venues and relative to its smaller size, returns some of the best racing returns in the country. Many new improvements, particularly in the provision of a new stand, have consolidated this picturesque course as one of one of the best attended race meetings in the calendar. The west of Ireland is a great place to sit on a horse for the first time, take some lessons, canter down a deserted beach or do some challenging long distance riding. Look out for AIRE ( Association of Irish Riding Establishments) approved equestrian centers for their well mannered horse and ponies and a range of activities for novice and experienced riders, such as Carrowholly Stables, Westport.
